Don’t neglect your well-being as a new mom, prioritize self-care with the tips shared in “New Mom: Hygge & Mindfulness”. Trust me, it will make all the difference for you and your little one.
As a new mother in Canada, the demands of caring for your little one can easily consume you and lead to neglecting your own well-being. After only two weeks with my lovely daughter and not sleeping (Cause I wanted to take care of her ALL the time!) I felt depressed and constant tired. I was NOT prepared for the hormonal roller coaster that comes with giving birth. One minute, I was on top of the world with joy and excitement, the next I was bawling my eyes out over something as the Harry Styles’ song “As It Was”. Yes, that’s right, a song!
Looking back, I now realize it was all due to the massive hormonal changes in my body. The love and attachment I felt for my newborn was overwhelming, and combined with the lack of sleep, it was a recipe for tears! My husband and I quickly understood that we both needed to recharge to be able to take care of our baby girl.
Taking the time to prioritize your own needs is essential in providing the best care for your baby. In this blog, “New Mom: Hygge & Mindfulness”, I share my 4 most important tips as a new mom! Whether you’re a new mom or just in need of some self-care inspiration, be sure to check out this blog for helpful tips and advice on how to take care of yourself as a new parent.
Support system
Having a support system is crucial for new parents. It can be overwhelming and exhausting, especially when you’re sleep-deprived and navigating the unknown waters of parenthood. It’s essential to have someone you can lean on, someone who understands what you’re going through, and who can offer a listening ear and a comforting hug.
For me, living in Canada, my support system wasn’t exactly around the corner. My husband is my rock, but I also knew I needed more. That’s when I discovered the Peanut app, where I connected with other mothers from around my city. It was a lifesaver! We shared our experiences, offered each other advice, and made friendships.
Whether it’s your partner, friends, or family, it’s important to have people in your corner to help you through the challenging times.
Hygge
Incorporating “hygge” into your daily routine as a new parent can be a lifesaver. “Hygge” It’s all about savoring the simple pleasures and finding joy in the present moment.
For me, “hygge” time is the best time. I love to snuggle up with my newborn in my arms, drink a warm cup of coffee, and re-watch my favorite Danish TV show, Borgen.
If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, take a moment to incorporate some “hygge” into your daily routine. You’ll be amazed at how much it can help you recharge and find joy in the everyday moments. Your mind and body will thank you for it. Read my other blogpost about “Hygge” here
Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness is a game-changer for new parents. For me, mindfulness takes the form of writing on Beskandi. Whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed, I sit down and write. It allows me to step back and see the bigger picture, and it helps me find gratitude and appreciation in the moment.
Whether it’s through writing, meditation, deep breathing, or any other technique, practicing mindfulness can help you stay centered and focused, even in the midst of the chaos that comes with being a new parent. It’s a chance to connect with yourself, to find peace and calm in the midst of the storm. Read my other blogpost about mindfulness here!
Me time
Schedule “me time”. It may seem impossible with a newborn, but it’s important to carve out time for yourself each day. This could be as simple as taking a long shower or going for a walk around the block. The key is to do something that brings you joy and helps you relax. Not sure what to do for your me time? It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate, just something that brings you joy and helps you relax. Maybe it’s a quiet cup of coffee, a good book, or a long walk in nature. Whatever it is, make it a priority and stick to it!
Remember, it’s okay to not be okay all the time. Being a new mom is a challenging and rewarding experience, but it’s important to prioritize your own well-being and mental health. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help or support when you need it!
Despite the occasional breakdown, being a new parent has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. And as time went on, my hormones leveled out, and I am now more able to enjoy all the joys of parenthood without the added emotional baggage.
So, to all the new parents out there: don’t be shocked by the hormones, embrace the emotional ups and downs, and enjoy the ride. After all, it’s all worth it for that little bundle of love in your arms!
